New Delhi:India observes National Education Day every year on November 11 to celebrate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the nation’s first Minister of Education and a visionary who shaped the foundation of independent India’s learning system.

Born in 1888, Maulana Azad was a freedom fighter, scholar, and reformer whose ideas continue to guide India’s educational journey. Serving as the Education Minister from August 15, 1947, to February 2, 1958, he laid the groundwork for institutions that transformed India into a knowledge-driven nation.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad: The Architect of Educational Reforms

Maulana Azad believed that education should not be limited to job preparation, but should nurture confidence, awareness, and moral responsibility. His vision emphasized that equal access to education—regardless of wealth, class, or region—was essential for India’s progress.

He once stated that “a nation cannot advance without the light of education reaching every home.” This belief inspired generations of policymakers to make learning inclusive and affordable for all citizens.

Origin of National Education Day

In 2008, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education) declared November 11 as National Education Day in honor of Maulana Azad’s contributions. The day is celebrated in schools, colleges, and universities with activities like debates, seminars, workshops, essay writing, and exhibitions that highlight the importance of learning and innovation in society.

Institutions Built on Azad’s Vision

Maulana Azad’s reforms led to the establishment of India’s leading educational and research institutions, including:

  • Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

  • Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)

  • University Grants Commission (UGC)

  • Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)

  • All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)

These institutions continue to symbolize his belief that education is the cornerstone of national development.

Punjab Police Marks National Education Day with Awareness Campaigns

On National Education Day 2025, the Punjab Police joined the celebrations by conducting awareness sessions in schools. The program focused on traffic rules, road safety, and responsible citizenship among students.

“On #NationalEducationDay, Punjab Police reiterates its commitment to empowering citizens through knowledge and awareness. Education lays the foundation of a progressive and responsible society,” the department shared on X (formerly Twitter).

This initiative reflects how education extends beyond textbooks—it is a tool for creating responsible, informed, and conscious citizens.

Celebrating the Spirit of Education in 2025

As India continues its journey toward becoming a global leader in innovation and research, National Education Day 2025 serves as a reminder of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s timeless message:education is the soul of a nation’s progress.

Every classroom, initiative, and reform in India today echoes his dream of an educated, empowered, and equitable society.
